There was a big event in Tokyo on Sunday, February 28: the 2016 Tokyo Marathon! This year marked the 10th anniversary of the race in Tokyo, and about 36,000 runners participated. Not only Japanese runners but also 6,000 runners from 85 different counties enjoyed this event. The weather was perfect for both runners and supporters.
We at SOEI also joined the 2016 Tokyo Marathon as part of the events celebrating our 30th anniversary year. Five young and energetic members of our staff were selected to run in the marathon. Unfortunately I was not selected as a runner because I am not so young and am slightly overweight!
In addition to these runners, we also organized a big cheering squad headed by our vice president, Mr. Yoshinori Shimizu, and many of our staff also enjoyed the event.
Mr. Yasuki Yanagi, the chief organizer for our 30th anniversary events, played a very important role in shooting a video of the runners and cheering squad while carrying his little daughter. He also interviewed our chair person, Mr. Tomokatsu Tsukahara.
Our cheering squad waited for the runners at certain points along the way. Once the runners approached, the squad gave them fruits and chocolate for energy, and took pictures with them. I believe that this help and warm welcome was a great source of power for the runners.
The five runners did a great job, with the support of the big cheering squad, and completed the entire 42.195 kilometers!!!
In the evening, we celebrated this effort with a dip in a hot spa, and many glasses of beer.
We are proud of these five brave persons. Thank you very much for giving all of us such a touching experience.
