Kyoto Environmental Nanotechnology Cluster

Kyoto Environmental Nanotechnology Cluster is a five-year project with total funds of 3300 million yen from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Universities in Kyoto and companies involved in the development of environment-preserving materials and parts using nanotechnology collaborate on this project.

On July 17, Kyoto Environmental Nanotechnology Cluster published a report on their research result for the year 2008, their first year. According to the report, they have successfully commercialized 16 developments. Namely, they founded one venture company, and commercialized 12 trial product developments and three new product developments. The original goal was to commercialize five trial product developments. They filed 10 patent applications, twice the number they aimed for. Sales were 27 million yen, far exceeding the original objective.

Kyoto Environmental Nanotechnology Cluster aims to achieve 7500 million yen in sales and to file 80 patent applications in five years. This project is an interesting collaboration of industry, government, and academia in Japan, and we will keep a close watch on the results of this project.
