The 125th Anniversary of the IPR System Projects

The year 2010 is the 125th year since the intellectual property system was established in Japan. To celebrate the 125th year, the Japan Patent Office started a series called “Messages from Modern Inventors to the Next Generations” in their website. This is a series of articles written by some of the leading inventors and researchers in Japan. The concept is to tell the stories of joy and difficulties in making an invention to young people and children who will create the future. The articles cover inventions or products that became popular and explain how the inventors came to realize those inventions through trial and errors.

In the articles, the author (an inventor/researcher) introduces his/her invention and answers the following questions:
• What inspired you to become an inventor/researcher?
• What specific ideas and difficulties have you faced as an inventor?
• What gives you joy as an inventor/researcher?
• What message would you like to give to the next generation?

Although these articles are directed to young people and children, they explain well known inventions and products in a way that is easy to understand and reveal the inventor’s thoughts in the development. I think that anyone involved in the intellectual property business would find these articles interesting.
