There is a shop placed in a residential area near the Soei Kyoto Office.

It’s Matumaeya, a well-established company which started business in 1392. They were already offering konbu (kelp) products to the imperial family from more than 200 years prior to the establishment of the Edo Shogunate in 1603.

It takes them six years to make their main product, “Hirome” which is salted kelp. It’s no ordinary salted kelp…or maybe it’s nothing but pure and simple salted kelp. I even think it should be a cultural heritage.

Matumaeya makes you feel the deep history of Kyoto.
It belongs to another world of time, compared to patents that last for a mere 20 years.
