I went to the Yoiyoiyoiyama (3 nights before the Grand Parade) of July 14!Festival music was being played on every hoko (float), the streets were full of stalls, lots of people were wearing yukata (summer kimono)— summer festivals are great! So, tonight, I am off to the Yoiyoiyama. And I will probably turn up at the Yoiyama tomorrow night, too!
The photo on the left is the real Naginata Hoko float. The one on the right is a recently found one-eighth model of a Naginata Hoko. From the elaborate details, it’s presumed to be made by painters and craftsmen who were actually involved in making the real versions. There are also marks left on the wheels indicating that they were pulled around and maybe used as a toy for the kids to play with. It’s truly amazing to think how horrifyingly rich the Mitsui family were to have made something like this for kids in theEdoera!
