PET Bottle Design

Recently, I realized that the plastic bottle of “Sokenbicha” tea from the Coca-Cola Company had changed. At least, the ones sold in convenience stores have.
They are now similar to the plastic bottles of “I LOHAS” water with a very thin material which can be squashed easily after drinking. It also says on the label, “Resin reduced by 40%” contributing to environmental conservation.
Whenever I see a change in the shape or material of PET bottles, it always reminds me of intellectual property rights.
“As a container, it needs to be not only easy to squash but to have a certain amount of strength. Does having these irregular surfaces give them strength to withstand force applied from various directions? But wait, may be they’re narrow here because making them easy to hold is also an important factor, etc., etc.” It smells full of patents and designs.
Another thing is that the shape of the containers can be different depending on where they’re being sold even if it’s the same product. I wonder if that’s because of the difference in the means for transportation or the difference in how they’re displayed?
